The Landrover/Rolls-Royce Landtrain is one of the most successful and most utilized vehicles designed in the post war period. Built following the creation of Landrover/Rolls-Royce, even today almost 1000 years since the initial design the hulking behemoths of steel and wood shunt across the world at impressive speeds not thought possible for machines of their size. Since the original collaborative design in 1978 many in the empire and beyond have attempted to recreate this pure marvel of engineering but none so far have succeeded.
The Landtrain was born out of nessecity for a post war empire to transport troops and goods accross the new vast empire and its colonies. Shipping was unstable thanks to huge disturbances in ocean currents caused by the second Jap-American conflict. Air travel was also infeasible as the upper atmosophere was polluted with nuclear waste and regions such as the sov-states would shoot down any plane. The only planes still flying in the 1970's were millitary fighters, bombers and nuclear dispersal craft. The landtrain was a unique multipurpose vehicle that operated in to modes. When inside industrialised borders it would utilise existing rail infrastructure for quick transport at much lower fuel costs however it was fully capable of traversing any terrain using huge armored wheels and several auxillary engines.
The landtrain was one of the greatest collaborations of empire science and engineering. With vital contributions made from accross the empire and it ultimately ending in creating one of the single most powerful corporations to ever exist, Landrover/Rolls-Royce.
Modes of Operation
When operating in this mode the top speed was increased by a conservative account of about 75% but some claims state that increases in speed upto 250% have been exhibited. This mode of operation uses existing rail infrastructure to increase the efficency of transportation and logistics. It uses a combined diesel-electric power source. With majority of the baseline power in this mode coming from huge electric engines on the main drive wheels powered through the empires vast network of nuclear fusion and fission stations.
However when operating out of the electrified zone. The diesel engines are more than capable of propelling the train at great speed. The nature of it's design allows for multiple gauges of track to be used for when reaching the ends of the empire infrastructure cannot be relied upon. Top speed can only be typically reached on guages of track atleast 20 ft 2 2⁄3 in. But anything as low as 4 ft 8 1⁄2 in could be used by the original design albeit at the restriction of speed.
All Terrain Mode
The secondary mode of the land train and was makes it a powerhouse of logistics is the all terrain mode. In this operating mode the train uses 6 armored wheels with individual suspension powered by 4 3200hp Rolls-Royce engines. These provide the power for shifting the train and any cargo it may be carrying across all sorts of terrain that may be encountered in the reaches of the empire from the swamps in northern germano-region to the deserts covering most of the african continent.
Armored troop carrier
This is a heavily armored modified version of the land train. This is primarily used for transporting troops near the border and as a consequence has increased protective capabilities and also is modified to utilise all-terrain mode much more effectively at the cost of reducing train mode efficiency.
Long Range Artillery Support
This modified variant is equipped with a huge long range GEC-Coventry Ordnance Works artillery cannon. This cannon was capable of achieving a range of 300km with astonishing accuracy which only got better thanks to the electromechanical-computerised accuracy of the new Siemens targeting system.
Experimental Nuclear Prototype
Developed in the early 2000's as a collaboration between the General Electro-Nuclear Company and Landrover/Rolls-Royce this prototype never reached fruition and only 6 remain left in the known world. Powered using the new GENC fusion cells it was designed to completely replace all diesel engines on existing landtrains however the technology would never acheive fruition as the fusion was not sustainable and stable enough for movement. With the introduction of the British Radio Corporation satwave satellite energy network. It was deemed pointlessly expensive and the project was scrapped.
